Is it normal to eat beaver's anus/ sex gland juice?

If you've ever eaten any prepackaged food products or beverages that taste like vanilla or raspberry, then you've probably ingested the oily secretions expelled by the ass-sac of the beaver.

Castoreum.

If you read the ingredients list of your vanilla or raspberry flavored item, and it says "artificial flavoring", then you've likely consumed beaver ass-juice.
Is it normal that these sorts of substances are regularly sneaked and slipped into our food supply?

I like eating my Beaver's Anus/ Sex Gland Juice directly from the source and not contaminated by any prepackaged food.

    A couple corrections:
It's not common at all. Wikipedia says about 300 pounds are used annually, compared to 2,600,000 pounds of vanillin.
If you're worried, it's not artificial flavoring you should look out for, since by definition anything that comes from a plant or animal is a NATURAL flavoring.

    • A couple things to consider are that many religions have dietary rules, and some followers of certain religions may think nothing of eating something after reading" natural flavoring" on the ingredients list.
The same goes for vegans who may go ahead and eat something that's marked as having natural flavorings, only to find out that they've been deceived into unwittingly consuming an animal product.
Not to mention all of the people who simply, would rather know what they're spending their money on, and feeding their families and themselves with.

when you really think about what you eat it IS gross! You know when you have fruit and fruit flies appear? There are eggs in the fruit that you eat. It's normal. Honestly, I'm more offended when GMOs and processed chemicals like HFCS and what not are in my food more than something that comes from nature.

Is that true?? Fruit flies appear? What do they look like? I might leave some fruit to get mouldy and see.

Does anyone know if Castoreum is used in organic products?

I probably have had this in food before. As gross as this is, those anal secretions tasted pretty good. I would've never thought those flavourings as being suspect.

Did you know that in Bagels, there is an ingredient that is put in there to prolong the product's shelf life, that is derived from human hair? O_o http://munchies.vice.com/articles/theres-human-hair-in-your-bread
As far as I am concerned, this is cannibalism.

    • Yeah, but at least with honey, milk and eggs, we all know what we're getting into.
That's the good thing about whole foods as opposed to prepackaged food products. We have the information outright, and can make more fully informed choices as to eat it or not.
That's not so with processed food products with mile long ingredients lists full of intentionally confusing and deceptive words.

I see... upon further research... you were actually serious!! but, the Castoreum seems a bit difficult to obtain, so I'm not sure how commonly it is used..? or is this a recent discovery, and they will have beaver-farms soon..? poor beavers :(

        • It isn't a newly discovered ingredient. I think that it's likely obtained by way of fur trappers.
Apparently, it's much cheaper for food manufacturers to use castoreum, instead of real fruit or vanilla bean extracts.
It is also used to make perfume, and is one of the thousands of ingredients that is used to manufacture cigarettes.

About the actual post, he sounds like he wants a big reaction from 'beaver ass juice' but who cares...Maybe castoreum is good for you.

        • That's what it is. Juices from the anal sac of the beaver. That's as accurate description as any for what castoreum is. Plainly stated.

It'll obviously be normal since it's supposedly in a lot of products. It's not like we're going to stop eating those foods or anything. I try not to think about it too much.
