Is it normal to dislike something just because a lot of others like it?

I've always lived to stand out and be unique. 9 times out of 10, I would not go anywhere near a lot of trendy stuff growing up--or, if I did, I would only do it so that people couldn't tell me 'don't knock it til you've tried it' (stuff such as Twilight, which I read back when it was a huge craze, and hated it). Granted, there are some things I like that are popular (I was really into Hannah Montana for awhile back before she went off the deep end, I enjoy Taylor Swift and I enjoy a little 1D every now and then), but the majority of the time I won't let myself like something just because it's popular. I don't know if it's because I'm annoyed or because of that part of me that wants nothing to do with modern culture and society, but I just can't bring myself to like a lot of things. There are some things I tried and just didn't get into, but there were also things that I didn't like before I even came across them because of their popularity. I don't consider myself a 'hipster' but I feel like I'm no less arrogant or whatever they're considered by most others because of this.

I think you may just be scared of losing your individuality. But, let me tell you something: individuality comes from doing what YOU want, not from abstaining from popular culture. An individual is someone who doesn't really care if someone calls them mainstream, because they're passionate about what they like and that's all that matters. Of course it's interesting to have little quirks like being involved in strange hobbies, but as long as you think your interests are valid then it's fine! For example, I like to knit, ghost hunt and play with Ouija boards, but I also enjoy going to popular bars in my city. I enjoy mostly obscure bands, but I will also listen the fuck out of Hedley or Mariana's Trench.

I recommend that when you try something new, try to push all that stigma to the back of your mind. Forget that it's trendy, forget that it's popular, just focus on whether or not you're going to enjoy it. If you end up liking something that's mainstream, don't be ashamed! Just embrace it, because it's another trait that makes you who you are. Don't not like things just because they're popular, because you could actually be missing out on a niche that's perfect for you!

You are a Contrarian. People like you lose a lot of money on the stock market. All the better for my investment portfolio.
