Is it normal to deny your own self/existence

So, essentially I pretend not to be a normal living ''person''. In denying my own ''self'' I'm constantly telling myself that I'm merely in control of my physical body and that my feelings, interests and future are illusions/arbitrary and do not matter. It is for this reason that for many years I have deliberately chosen not to hang/go out with friends and to ignore the important stages in a person's life such as getting a job and a driver's license.

Well, that's a depressingly psychotic way to live.

That's great...as long as you're sustaining yourself and not draining others. Sounds like it could be kind of zen if you do it right. Although you seem rather presumptuous in your comment there, so I guess you're still working on enlightenment?

Zen... sounds great, except, for me the last couple of years have been very miserable, not zen at all. I would just like to know if there are others dealing with this issue as well. There must be.

In that case, it sounds like you might be trying to justify your lack of participation in society? It's normal to become overwhelmed with such duties and avoid them, but not healthy.

If your reason for not getting a license is to use public commute/bicycling/walking/carpooling instead to help the environment (or spiritual reasons or what have you) and you avoid a job in lieu of unconventional work that is sustaining you, that would be zen.

A person who experiences the natural flow of life wouldn't live any other way. It would destroy someone to do what you do.
