Is it normal to contribute to a time capsule?

I went to a party this weekend for a friend's dog's birthday. (Always a good excuse for a party.) He asked us to help him make an audio time capsule. There was a list of prepared questions we could answer, or we could say something free style. We didn't have to state our name if we didn't want to.

The task was simple, send a message to the host to be heard 10 years later. Most of us have known each other for about 10 years so it sounded like a good idea to me. But not everyone wanted to do it. Is it normal to be too shy to secretly record a message to a friend you've known for such a long time?

Would you do it?

  • I really don't understand some people. Yes, what they did was abnormal.

I dunno, I think it's kinda silly. In 10 years they probably won't give a fuck about you if they remember who you are.

I wouldn't mind doing it, unless somehow, deep inside, I secretly hated that person.

    I definitely would have volunteered/contributed.

This is (or was once) a very popular activity for high school grads to do. Everyone in the class would contribute to a time capsule and come dig it up 30 years later or some shit. We never did that. I don't even know if I am going to my high school reunion...

Correction, if 20 years from now, I make decent money, have a college degree and I am not obese, I will totally go to my high school reunion. No fuck you, it IS superficial but I'm allowed to be superficial.

I would propose that to my friends. That's seems like a nice idea.

  • Sounds fine. I don't know why people would feel uncomfortable with that, unless it highlights a lack of confidence within themselves. I remember doing a time capsule in primary school. I must have drawn something. Cool

Aww, happy birthday to your friend's dog:D!

Yeah, I'd probably do it. I like stuff like that. It's a little bit depressing to me if I think too much about it, though.
