Is it normal to clench my jaw in my sleep?

I'm a 25yo guy. I don't think I have an overly stressful life. Just the usual, money problems, girl/guy problems, school, but over the last few months I've had this ever present pain in my jaw and head and gums. Only on the left side. Apparently I have TMD, which is an unconscious tensing of the jaw. Doctor says he thinks it's stress related and the only thing I can attribute it to is my new gf. We started dating around the time it started bothering me. She does drive me fucking insane sometimes, but I love her to death. What I wanna know is if anyone has had a similar problem with their jaw and how they fixed it. I wanna try acupuncture. I wear a mouth guard when I sleep but it just keeps me from grinding not the pressure that's causing all the pain. It's absolutely debilitating sometimes. I've missed so much work they're probably gonna fire me. I'm no stranger to pain, she's kind of my mistress. But this is the worst thing, the worst pain I have ever been in. No wonder they torture people by messing with their teeth...

sorry to hear. I sometimes contract certain facial muscles when sleeping. I can tell you it's most definitely related to stress though. Often you may think you're not stressed but the only difference is you've become emotionally desensitized to it. body language is the great tellsign

Have you tried sleeping with your mouth open? I mean it's not the best solution but is the lesser of two evils. And theoretically seems like the most anatomically relaxed position for a jaw. I've noticed some people sleep with their tongue out just a tad, if you can manage that, maybe it would be enough of a negative reinforcement to stop clenching your jaw? Just throwing theories at this point. Try to relax your jaw and face as much as you can before sleeping.

That's one of the problems with my night guard thing. It makes my mouth fall open and it actually makes me grind my teeth sometimes. I can't sleep as a mouth breather Lol. I've tried sports guards and all kinds of things. And the one the dentist makes won't be any better. Its the pressure that's the problem and not the actual friction. I need muscle relaxer to locally administer when I go to sleep. Even if I gotta stick a needle in my jaw id totally do it to be out of this pain.

Similar, my jaw is weird, its not overshot or undershot whatever it is when the bottom is in front of the top, but they are at the same level yano?
Anyway I have had jaw ache in both sides for as long as I can remember around the bottom of the jaw, my teeth aren't great and the orthodontist told me I could have my jaw sorted out with surgery. I mentioned the pain to my normal dentist as he said the aching is coming from me grinding my teeth in the night.. my teeth aren't wearing out and it happens a few times a year, I wear a retainer anyway and hate it haha. But it is painful when my jaw starts playing up. I don't honestly know because mine doesn't happen that often and when it does im not stressed, maybe have a word with your girlfriend and your relationship.
