Is it normal to change from sales job to merchandising career?

I just graduated college with my degree in Food Science, however I've always wanted to work in Merchandising. I wanted to switch to an Apparel major but my mother wanted me to stick with the sciences. I just got a job and I moved to the NYC a few weeks ago. My aunt suggested that to make some extra money I should apply for a part time job at a department store. I just got an interview for next Friday at Bloomingdales for a Gucci Handbags Sales Professional and I really want this job! I wanted to know if I stay at this job for a long time and I'm good at it, what are my chances of going from a sales job to an entry level Merchandising job at Bloomingdales?

You could try speaking to your Human Resources Department and see how to get into that position. When I first started working for my current position - I called up HR and asked them on advice and tips to get into my ideal position and they told me how I could do it.
