Sometimes older people have a habit of doing this with young people.

I'm more than ten years older than your mother.

The only people I call kids are those in their teens and younger. I'd only call someone older than that a kid if I was jokingly emphasising the difference in our ages, or if I wanted to annoy them and thought that implying they were immature might piss them off.

Sometimes older people do this by accident if the person is roughly the same age as their own children. So you could be 50 but an 80 yr old woman might refer to you as kid.

Some people call people younger than oneself a kid. I see this as a power move to exert dominance by age. I dont use it unless I am actually talking to someone below the age of 15. Anyone above 15 young adult until 19 then adult 20+.
