Is it normal to be unnaturally calm while on the road?

I creeped myself out earlier while driving home from work. I peered down at a text on my phone while driving, and when I looked up I was about one second away from driving directly into the edge of a guard rail. I apologize, I don't normally use my phone while driving, and I wouldn't do it again.

What scared me, however, was my complete lack of a reaction. I just swerved back onto the road, put the phone down, and kept driving. My heart rate didn't even go up. Considering how close I was to a serious car accident, I feel like I should have been more panicked.

No, I haven't. I'm a fairly new driver, on the road for just four months.

I think you need to have more realization of what it would be like if you did. That would help you respect it more and probably keep you more aware as well.

Maybe watching some of these would help?

Maybe going to a go-cart track or something and feeling (albeit on a much smaller scale) the impacts would help?
