Is it normal to be uncomfortable with wearing loose shorts in dirty areas?

My wife is uncomfortable wearing loose fitting shorts to her grandmother's home, which is kind of a dirty place, because she is afraid 'something' will find it's way to her crotch. She is however just fine with wearing a dress there.

    Just saying it's silly to be worried about something getting into your shorts, when a dress, even though it's longer, is completely open.
