Is it normal to be this badly treated by an airline ?

I recently went on a long haul flight with a big airline using 747 Boeing's. I had to take an internal flight before the long leg. But it was one package, the two flights.
Anyway I forgot to ask when I checked my luggage if it would go straight through to my final destination. I was worried so when a stewardess came past I stopped her and asked her but she said she didn't know, I didn't believe her but said nothing and just asked her to ask the pilot. To my horror she sort of laughed at me. I got angry and pointed out that if he didn't know who the hell would know. I know if wouldn't have put all of the hundreds of bags on the airliner himself but I'm sure if helped the stewardess's . Then I told her to remember I was paying her wages and she would have got a good tip if she hadn't have laughed at me infront of hundreds of people
Is it normal to be treated like this.
