Is it normal to be scared for your account?

I have just started a checking account a few days ago, it was a troubling experience just because it was so new to me. Any how, I know no one can know my pin and online banking password, but I'm still a little suspicious, not because I think someone knows it, but because their is a possibility someone CAN. Do y'all ever feel that way? Do you ever think someone can find out your info? How often do yall change your pin?

I never do online banking or ATM. I don't trust it. Servers that are online are susceptible of being hacked. I've been told, that ATM hackers can somehow trace what numbers you hit. I do everything old fashioned via checks or paper money and coins.

Wow I'm impressed, seriously impressed, good on you. I held out for a long time about using ATM's because they were putting bank staff out of jobs and only succumbed when banks started charging fees for over the counter service.

I don't think I know anyone with a cheque a/c these days, but I do pay as many bills as possible in cash. One Australian utility company (maybe Telstra?) introduced a non-online fee, would you believe and they tried to charge me for it recently because I'd paid their bill at the Post OFfice: I objected strongly and they took it off the bill .. bloody cheek!

I just checked and it was Telstra - check your bills before you pay them, folks!

I'm trying to use these methods for as long as I can, but there may unfortunately come a time where I may have to get a credit/debit card. I don't like idea of them. I don't want to form a dependence on card companies and feel like a slave. And, I don't like the fact that they track your purchases. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable. The only thing that really bothers me, is that the branch I go to keeps trying to push me into online banking. I've stated time and time again that I don't want to but, they never listen.

          Go to a credit union.

And they are safer you think. My wallet was recently stolen and I got my money back because of fraud protection. My cash was long gone and they can't replace that.

There is new security protection all the time. As a business, you cannot legally store cc info. It is stored by proxy on a remote site. True, hackers are currently working to break the new rules. But someone is always doing this regardless of technology.

I've heard this is typical of Americans. I don't understand the paranoia and fear of technology :/ here in Aus, cards that you swipe without the need for signing or a PIN are now standard and no one thinks twice.

Well I do: I strongly object to my debit card being accepted without a PIN or a signature - how do they know it's me?

I think it's disgraceful that this was introduced with no community consultation and it's not true that we all accepted it.

It's not paranoia or fear of technology to be wary of your bank a/cs being misused, it's happened quite a lot but often isn't publicised for fear of the methods being more widely copied.

Really? Are there ever any big hacking attempts in your country?

Yes, my grandmother is paranoid, too. Old people often are.

We have good reason to be paranoid: just about everyone is out to either get us or get rid of us

Not that I know of. Bit of a problem if you lose your card, but it's easy enough to cancel and get a new one.
