Is it normal to be offended when someone you don't know well calls you "honey?"

I think it often comes off as condescending, and implies a familiarity that hasn't actually been earned.

It really gets on my nerves when a strange woman calls me "honey." I've lost my temper a few times when it has happened.

There's just some "honey" "sweetie" "babe" people out there.

The word means different things for different people. Like in England "Lad" refers to a boy or young man, whereas in Scotland it refers to dog. So if an Englishman in Scotland is not careful could easily insult someone by using this word.

Offended might not be the word, but I agree, it's unearned.

I know a guy at a store and he continuously calls me 'love,' which I like being called but who is he to call me it?

I use it often and find it ridiculous that someone would be offended.

I don't think you should be offended...I get annoyed sometimes but it's not anything to lose your temper over.

I understand what you're saying, but you have to understand that it's the term is only being used because 1) They don't know your name and 2) They think your sweet.

Try taking it as a compliment rather than someone forcing themselve onto you.
