Is it normal to be irritated by breast cancer awareness?

I feel really insensitive for it, but I'm so sick of hearing stuff about breast cancer. You can buy just about anything in pink now (I have pepper spray, rubber gloves, and I'm sure other things that don't immediately come to mind), and I'm just annoyed by all the buzz about it now. There are so many other things out there that are more deadly than this. And yes, I know it takes a lot of lives each year, but so does lung cancer---actually, it takes almost double the number of lives. Is it normal to be upset about this?

It is a little silly that it's put on a pedestal while other deadly cancers are just pushed off. Personally, I feel it's not that breast cancer should be less public, but rather that other problems need to be brought to such a light- though the frilly shit is getting to be too much.

Despite my joke below, I agree with this entirely.

I dislike breast cancer awareness simply because whenever I see it all I can think is that women are valued simply as sex objects. Whenever I see something like "save the boobies" I get pretty upset and ashamed at my gender.

Also yes, there are other deadlier forms of cancer that should be showcased as well.

Without Googling it can any one tell me what Cushings Syndrome or Addisons disease are.

There's lots of disease's we should be more aware of.

its all just marketing and advertising to get people to buy a bunch of junk they dont need they think its going to a good cause but all it is is another tax break for rich corporate fat cats or what we like to call "charity" but hey if it makes people feel better to think there money is going to a good cause then more power to them

  • I can see the reasoning behind it. Why focus on a form of cancer that takes more lives when you can focus on one that takes less?

    Lol.

It's a money-making, lucrative campaign. That's why they're beating a dead horse with this breast cancer awareness stuff.lu

Breast cancer is a serious issue. I'm sure most people who've never known anyone who died of breast cancer are indifferent, but I've known two women who died from it. Therefore, it's not something I take likely.

Cancer as a whole is a serious issue.

Whilst breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, it's also one of the most treatable, with one of the lowest mortality rates.

When you look at other cancers, such as lung cancer and bowel cancer, the incidences are rarer, but the mortality rate is incredibly high.

I can't speak for OP, but the frustration for me is seeing the disproportionate attention paid to breast cancer over other, far more deadly cancers.

And the reason breast cancer is one of the most treatable is because of the awareness now which thereby gave us the knowhow. Most people know that lung cancer and bowel cancer are caused by smoking and diet. Not everyone is aware of the genesis of breast cancer, though.

I'm not suggesting there should be less awareness or consideration of breast cancer, just that those far harder cancers to treat should be given similar attention - and similar funding for research / treatment.

Prostate cancer, for example, has a comparable incidence rate to breast cancer and has very little to do with lifestyle, but gets nowhere near the same attention.

Well you can thank the pharmaceutical and insurance companies for that one. Now you know why I think everyone should be encouraged to eat at least one lemon a day. Lemons have natural cancer killers in them. I know a guy in his 80's who looks like he's in his 60's and still works out like a demon. He's healthy as a horse and never had cancer partially because he eats a spoonful of frozen lemon each meal.

I'd guess it's more to do with culture than insurance or Big Pharma.

As for lemons, meh. There are a million and one things you can eat, drink and do that have been claimed to be 'cancer killers', some of which have simultaneously been claimed to be carcinogenic.

I don't really bother taking notice. Better just to focus on a generally healthy lifestyle, and being attuned to your body so that you'll hopefully notice if something's not quite right.

As to that guy in his 80s, there have been men and women over 100 that have claimed the key to longevity is to smoke, drink and have a good time... So... I generally put that kind of thing down to genes and luck :P

Yes, awareness helped us with research and helped save lives. But at this point, it's just overdone. I wouldn't be surprised if every adult and child over the age of 9 or 10 in the world knew about it and that it's bad. I don't see why shoving it down our throats and making everything come in pink is going to raise any more awareness than it already has. We get the point now. I don't think that anyone's going to forget about it and stop researching it.

Bowel cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer are just as deserving of awareness campaigns and research funding. But they're seldom given the same share of the spotlight.

Movember is supposed to be a fun way to raise awareness of prostate cancer, kind of an attempt to redress the balance in fundraising. Aussie men done good!

I get why you feel that way, OP. I think everybody is better off donating to general cancer research institutions anyway, rather than those focusing on niche cancers.

I had a bad experience with someone raising money for cancer research recently, who decided to stop me in the street and tell me how many cancer cells are in my body right now - then asked "doesn't that scare you?" FUCK off.

I know that lung cancer and colon cancer are the two deadliest cancers, respectively, and a friend of mine's mother died of pancreatic cancer, which is usually only discovered in the later stages and kills somewhere in the 90% range of cases. But you don't hear anything about those.

'touched' would've been a better word, but you got my point. I actually like the color, I'm just sick of the fact that most of the pink things you see now that aren't children's toys or clothing are only pink to raise awareness for breast cancer and a portion of the proceeds go to research.

I would much rather hear heaps on cancer awareness than a bunch of bullshit on AIDS awareness. People get cancer, good, decent, people, and there are very few ways to actually prevent something like breast cancer. Its victims are innocent. How do you get AIDS? By being a promiscuous whore with dirty sexual habits. I wish everyone would die from AIDS already, and use the AIDS money for cancer instead.

Obviously you've never met/heard of a child who is born with it because their mother had it and passed it on to them. They weren't even born yet--they didn't do anything to deserve it. Some people get it by being raped. And that's not the only way you get AIDS anyway.
