Is it normal to be good at something and yet not care about it(please read all)

Is it normal to be good at something and know nothing about it. I like some sports but I don't know players, go to games, and watch the games on tv. I like art but I don't know the full history and just hate art museums I like art but most of the pictures are just so flat, not very colourful and don't really pop. I like music but I cant name every artist I listen too. I was advised that looking into these interests might help me find friends of common interest. I don't know anything about these subjects though. The sad thing is I don't care about the history or any of that either.

    Yes it is normal.

Not everybody who is good at maths wants to be a mathematician, learn about maths history - or even enjoys maths. Not everybody who is good at drawing wants to be an illustrator, or even draw. And so on.

It's unfortunate that you have skills you have little use for now, but hey, they could come in handy at some point in the future.

    • I do enjoy these things but I don't care about the history or athletes or any of that. A lot of time when I say I like that I am told I should know the trivia but I don't care.

I know mediums, supply's and techniques but I don't know a lot of famous paintings or what they mean. I like playing basket ball but I don't know the stats of the players.

I was told that you do not really care about something unless you know the history but that really does not matter to me.

I hate being told im not dedicated because of this. I feel like since I enjoy art I should like museums but when I go I just sit there really bored. In fact I hate most museums just a bunch of boring displays they don't do anything.

There was one museum I enjoyed but it was all about science.

        That's also incredibly ordinary.

There's a difference between being an artist and an art historian. You don't necessarily need a knowledge of art history to be able to paint, draw or sculpt well. You don't necessarily need to ever enter a gallery, or enjoy looking at other people's work.

That applies to basketball too. If you know the rules of the game you can become good without ever having heard of the NBA.

In fact that applies to most activities. You can be passionate about doing something, and good at doing it, without necessarily being interested in the history or wider 'scene'.

Lack of knowledge obviously bothers you, but acquiring it bores you. Most people don't know jack about anything unless it's a passion. I think that's what you're missing. Passion: an obsession that comes with time, trauma, slight insanity or a combination of the above. Good luck.

    • I like these things.. I dont care enough to learn the history or watch others do it. It just seems pointless if its not something I am doing myself.

I think you shouldn't limit yourself to saying you do or don't like something. You may find something that interests you to such an extent that you read a book or two on it and become even more interested but don't force that. Just keep sifting through it all patiently without expecting anything.

We live in a culture of overload so don't stress yourself out because at it's root this is a trivial problem. The best our culture can offer are things that provide insight into ourselves. Look for things you see yourself in and soon enough you see a little of yourself in everything.

I can be pretty good at cooking when I want to be but for the most part I don't care to engage in that activity and I tend to resent it when people imply that should I do it more often.

Well, DUH, you can have raw natural talent in something but not have any background in it.

All my life I've been praised for my writing and it's been my best subject but I personally don't like to write long drawn out; essays, articles, and such.
    Normal :)!

how is it you're good at those things again? you just said in so many words you don't like sports, arts and music. are you a star player in your team? are you painting masterpieces the world has yet to see? do excel at playing any instrument or have the voice of a nightingale but just haven't made it in the industry yet? i fail to understand your point

    • As in good at the sport, good at art and likes listening to music. Yet hating art museums, not watching that sport on tv, and not an expert at music artist trivia. Like some people like bands and know the people in the band the history and name of all the albums and songs.

So how then can you become great at something you barely have interest in?

        • You think being good at something means you know everything about it? Its skill and talent. Sports is muscle memory. If you practice something for so many years you get better at it.

Some people are naturally going to do better possibly since they are taller or have traits more valued in that field. However practice has no correlation with the trivia. You believe you can suddenly be great at things by simply watching it on tv?

Watching people play something does not make you an athlete, simply watching someone make art does not mean you can do it. Watching a magician does not mean you know his tricks.

If it was really so simple everyone would be able to do this. If it was so easy we would not have competitions would we? You think gymnasts in the Olympics got there by doing nothing but watching other people? They practiced all the time.

Its skill, talent and practice. Doing something is not the same as watching something. Observation does not magically give you abilities. Its silly you think so.

"IIN to be good at something and know nothing
about it" this really sounds stupid I should have told you this from the start, go find somewhere else to be arrogant

            • Well sorry I am not a expert like you think you are. You are the one coming off as arrogant. I really do not care how much you want to brag. Your arrogance does not impress me. Please get over yourself.

i can agree to the sports on that but not the arts as they are completely different in their essence. one of the things every artist, at least a painter, HAS to do in the later years of his/her studies is the replica so at least then he/she has to study other artists, their strokes, movements even so to get just the right effect. in my opinion you cannot create great art on any media, be it fine arts, performing arts, literature, film, etc. without massive exposure to other artists' works... if you look around every musician mentions the artists that influences their work, for instance. i mean, how can you produce something you DON'T KNOW anything of? i'd be interested to know what your take is

            • Its called art class and you realize artists have created new different ways of art. So you just experiment and figure out what works. That is if you truly care about art and like doing it. Its not like its impossible and you realize art is mandatory in school right?

the music part seems pretty normal to me. the other two not so much. how good are you at the sport and art? have you gotten scholarships for either? awards? sold works of art? reviews from accredited specialists? what are your criteria for judging your talents?

        • Yes I have gotten awards. not for the music thing though. I did play an instrument before but I was only intermediate level so not great at it.

            • Clay, sketching, paint(need more practice on that though). Top artist in the country I won top 10. I have not found any international contest. I was in a few contests but that was the biggest one I ever entered in.
