I find North Korea extremely fascinating. Why? Because it's so surreal and absurd, like no other place on earth. A place taken straight from a George Orwell novel. A place so insane that it's hard to believe such a dystopic place actually exists. Just thinking about it gives me shivers down my spine.
It's normal, because life there is so much different and really makes you grateful for everything you've got, living in the free world.
Some parts about North Korea remind me of stories my parents told me about communism in Bulgaria. The food shortages, electricity regimes, where you had no power during the night, the countless government drones employed just to make your life harder... Except the communism we had in Bulgaria was a mild version of the hell that ruined other countries.
Sure, with the collapse of the USSR, many countries were now free to chose what to be, but many were still plagued by the after effects of communism. Check out modern Russia, Ukraine, or Moldova for some examples...
North Korea however, continues to be stuck in that 80s communism era, with computers and flat screen TVs/ monitors being the only evidence that the 80s are long gone...
I am fascinated by it too. Watching "Michael Palin In North Korea" is the closest I got to it, though.
I felt the same way in fact it was my special obsession and I even made a character who is a North Korean soldier who was like my "imaginary friend" cause I found them sexy
