I find it interesting how you say the guy "reeked of sex". That choice of words just might indicate that you were subconsciously aware of the reason you found him attractive.
Most people are only consciously aware of really strong smells, but there have been studies which strongly suggest that we're far more influenced by aromas than we're aware of. Our noses are capable of detecting very faint scents, but because humans are primarily visually-orientated animals we don't pay a lot of attention to that, so we just have a vague "feeling" or what we take to be an "instinctive reaction" to a person or place or situation.
There is some evidence that natural body aroma is an important, subconscious factor in mate selection. Google "T-shirt experiment" if you want to learn more.
So maybe what actually happened was that you saw a guy with facial features you found appealing, and at the same time the aroma of his body was wafting across the parking lot. Your olfactory sensors picked this up even if you weren't consciously aware of it, and your lizard-brain (the part of our brain that controls sexual responses and other basic bodily functions) decided that a viable mate was nearby. Of course, if the guy's personal hygiene was actually as bad as you suggest, it's likely that if you got up close to him you'd gag, your eyes would water and the response of the rational part of your brain would be along the lines of, "No fucking way!"
