Is it normal to be asked to bring a dish to pass at the company picnic?

My daughter works in a factory with a couple hundred employees. In her recent check was a notice inviting her and her family to the company picnic. Notice requested RSVP, and asked participants to bring a dish to pass. Company will provide hot dogs and beverages. Not only that, but the picnic is to be held on the company's property on the ball field next to the parking lot. Also, this is a "no tobacco use" on premises facility.
My daughter invited her Mom and I to go with. I said "NO WAY"! What a cheap place!
I told my daughter that we'll take her out to a decent restaurant, away from work, where she can have a smoke if she wants to, and she doesn't have to bring a dish to pass, she might even have some to take home.
Is this a cheap company, or what?

It's not about being cheap, it's supposed to promote a sense of community as you admire what your friends and colleagues have made. You completely missed the point .-.

So if somebody invited you to a party and told you to bring your own food you would be good with that?

Totally, I don't mix with people who can afford to cater for parties and neither can I, it's so totally normal in my circle no-one would need to ask

Where I work we have potlucks for people who are retiring and most employees are happy to participate, including me. This wasn't advertised as a potluck, the invitation called it the company's annual picnic.

That's a a pretty weak response. How about giving me something I can comment on.

        Gimme gum gum...

Ok fine. I do recall the first time I was invited to a potluck I was a little like wtf?? But then I was all like duh, this is a pretty neat idea. You get to try new things and share and all that happy horse shit. The company isn't being cheap either, it's just a type of thing that people do. N stuff.

I don't think I am stuck up and rude, and I think if I had a company and I wanted to throw a party for my workers I wouldn't tell them, "bring your own food".

If your daughter wants to go then let her. If she doesn't then she wont have to RSVP. I never been to a "potluck" but it sounds like a fun thing to do with the people you work with. In a way you're right - if i was the boss i'd throw a party where i cater all the food. But for a couple hundred employees it would most likely be expensive.

I cant tell if the company is being "cheap". But it sounds like they want to foster a "family" like environment in the workplace which i dont think is a bad idea, especially when you have over 100 people working for you.

Maybe the company can't afford to cater for all its employees and their families. Sharing food is a social thing, I feel sorry for you if you don't realise that

I work at a company with about 120 people and every month the owners take us out for a meal, it usually racks up to a couple of thousand pound each time.

Sounds like the company really appreciates it's workers. Nice!

Yeah they do. My point was if we took our families as well the bill would be astronomical lol.

Well, I wanted to know if that was normal, and the consensus is overwhelming that YES that's normal! So, I guess I'm the one that's not normal. I thank everybody for their input!

I worked for a company and we did both. We had softball, volleyball matches between departments. Those were usually pot luck.

It isn't normal and hell yeah its cheap but the participants are willing and at least there wasn't a formal get together instead they post it on the paycheck. YEAH stay the fuck away from that shit
