Is it normal to be annoyed by this?

This isn't a big deal, but I went to my cousin's wedding the other day and something bothered me. I don't usually go to weddings so I don't know if it's the same for all of them. But at the end they announced the couple as Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smith (fake name). Like if they had just said the last name it'd be fine, but putting the guys first name in there just makes it seem like hey here's this person with an identity and heres his wife. Like? I wish someone would leave out my name on my wedding day... Like I said not a huge issue, it just bothered me a bit... and I don't know if that's how it's usually done.

That is how it's usually done. It's leftover from the days when women were seen as chattel, and in some religious communities still are.

This annoys the hell out of me when I hear it done that way. Many couples do say "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" or "Mr. and Mrs. Jane and John Smith", but hearing it done the other way rankles me. It makes it seem like the woman has just lost her identity.

Why bother getting married, just live together.

    • There are many legal benefits to being married. It makes many things a lot simpler, especially if you have kids.

I think it's annoying too and you can have it done however you want on your wedding day. Just make sure the person announcing it knows your wishes! No worries.

Seems old fashioned. Not a fan but whatever they like.
