Is it normal to be annoyed by others saying "i can't complain?"

I work as a cashier in a lower-tier supermarket and part of my job is asking customers how they are doing. To which they frequently reply, "I can't complain."

I find this response to be wholly disingenuous. It not only feels like a complaint in itself , but it's also as if they're trying to take some moral high ground. As if what they were actually saying was, "although I can complain, I am choosing not to because I am blessed to even have existed."

is it normal or have I just read too far in to it?

I think you're reading too far into it.

Would you rather them tell you their life story and all their problems?

If given those two choices . . . Yes, I'd rather listen to their problems. Ideally they could simply reply, "not too well" or something along those lines. Just as we don't have to get in to why a customer is feeling great, I wouldn't believe it necessary to get into why they feel things could be better for them.

Perhaps I'm just tired of the facade.

Apathy is generally looked down on as a negative emotion, at least from my experience anyway. I understand a little what your getting at though. Social formalities get old sometimes.

It pisses me off when people say that too.

It's sort of a brush off. Like saying, "Fine."

"I can't complain." = "Not great, but not bad neither".
