You should dress however you want regardless of your age. I'm 30 and have always dressed my own style which is close to steam punk or punk/western. I like having my own style and don't really care if people think I am weird, because I am anyway. I like the goth and punk style on girls too.
Just don't take it into your old age, no one wants a witch for a grandma.
I would think that by 22 you'd pretty much lose interest in that sort of rebellious, shock behavior.
At a certain point, earning a living and conforming to society's demands (on the outside) should become a necessity if one desires to have a certain standard of living, unless one can capitalize on one's nonconformity, such as an artist or entertainer.
This is why I stopped dressing the way I like to...
You see, dressing like that is not a spoiled brat statement. Yes, it was popular to dress like that to piss off your parents. Those people have since grown up and lost interest. However, for some people, this style of dress has nothing to do with shock, attention, rebellion, angst, or any of that shit. See, for some people, the guy or girl wearing all black, with huge boots and massive eyeliner is actually attractive. They actually feel pretty when they put black lipstick on- the same way your girlfriend feels pretty wearing a bikini and dying her hair blond. You and everyone else just have to accept that some people like things that just aren't typical.
Though my style is different than this, the sentiment is the same. I stopped trying to feel pretty because everyone downed me for it, and now I feel completely uncomfortable AND unpretty. Live and let live, or else don't be surprised when people are upset.
Dress how u like, i mean look at Dirtybirdy for example. She has awesome style that is unique to her. And in her "advance age" too =P <3
People will always judge you for what you are, what you eat, how you dress and the ilk so its always up to you to decide to listen to them or to shut them out
I'm 23 and have been dressing "weird" since I was around 14-15 (Before that I had little to no interest in clothes)
To me I can't ever imagine ever looking "normal" The thought of looking "normal" even for eight hours on a job makes me cringe.
oh, there's also a whole article in the guardian about it. it seems to be more acceptable in the u.k. i think

Honestly, I see so many people every day with shitty styles and poor tastes. Nobody, and I mean nobody, deserves the right to judge you. Really, they don't. Their stupid fucking hooped earrings and their shit ass makeup job -can't apply eyeshadow for shit- or guys with tight wrangler lookin cowboy boots talkin about skinny jeans lookin gay on guys (Seriously? While you pick your wedgie out of your ass, pretty much- okay..) Or a gangsta bitch who stole scene hair making fun of the girl who hairsprayed her scene shit up. Fuck what any of those lowlife, ripoff, wannabe, washed up, shit talking, superficial, mindless, ignorant, dick-jerking, ass-licking, cum-guzzling, super-sluts have to say. You go bring sexy back. *Snaps fingers z style*
I'm 22 and into the gothic thing as well. Just do what you like. I've noticed that a lot of (if not most) members of the gothic community are well into their 40's or older, or at least from what I've seen. I think if it's something that you enjoy then you should just stick with it. Don't worry about what other people think.
Take it from someone who just ran around town a few hours ago in a morphsuit in 45°F scaring people: Dress how you want to dress. Who the hell cares about what people on the outside looking in think? Besides, I've seen plenty of gothic adults in my neck of the woods.
22 is still pretty young.
I think its fine to dress "goth" or whatever in your personal time but if you dress that way at your job people may not take you seriously. Unless you work at Hot Topic :)
