Is it normal to bar the police from your home if they don't have a warrant?

My housemate moved out owing me lots of money but made the mistake of leaving half his stuff behind. I packed it up and moved it off site and said, "Pay up and then I've give you your stuff." But ex-housemate sent the cops around instead. Of course, they could do nothing as it is not illegal to retain stuff in your house that someone's left behind. So I told the cops to go away and there was nothing they could do. They couldn't arrest me, nothing. I felt so empowered.

For the police to even try and enter your home without a warrant is both wrong and incompetent. More people should be aware of their rights in regards to the police to avoid getting screwed over.

Take the person to small claims court to collect the rent he owes you. The judge will order him to pay what he owes and make arrangements for the police to accompany him to the location where you have his "stuff" so that he can retrieve it. I'm sure you'd rather have the money than his stuff.

It's definitely normal and well within your rights to protect yourself from illegal search and seizure.

Good for you, standing up for your rights like so. More people should be aware about the rights they have. The police agency was being extremely incompetent for even agreeing to send cops to your house when they of all people should know the law.

Well then if he is a jerk as you say and he owes you a lot of money, I say your actions are justified. You are well within your rights anyways so there shouldn't be a problem.
