Is it normal the thing i turned out to hate, i happen to be like a lot?

When we read it in school, I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED Catcher in the Rye. Just, hated.

But looking back on it now, Holden reminds me a lot of myself. And I hate it.

Here are some similarities I think we have. If any are false about him feel free to correct me.
-suck at school because I don't apply myself (though I really don't know some subjects)
-wanted to move west and live quietly as a mute (I need to shut my fucking mouth)
-wants to make kids happy

Ugh, there are a few more but. Whatever.

And it so happens that we're both hypocrites and spoiled, asshat brats who get more than we deserve.

I hate him and I hate the book, but I felt like Holden and I have many similarities.

Where can I find a man like Holden? I've developed a deep hatred/love for him now.

And NO I WILL NOT KILL SOMEBODY LIKE JOHN LENNON. Have you seen the South Park joke on it? Fucking lol!

Lots of love.

When I was a teenager, I hated one of my next-door neighbors for absolutely no apparent reason. My mom said that she didn't understand why, because the neighbor reminded her of me. My therapist at the time told us that the reason why I hated my neighbor was precisely because the neighbor was like me, and I didn't like it.

tl;dr - sometimes we just hate people or things that remind us of ourselves.

I'm sure Holden himself would hate "Catcher in the Rye."

    • I never thought about that. Care to go more in-depth with it? You got me hooked.

    tastes change.

i use to love that book but now it's hard for me to read it because I think holden is a phony as the people he complains about. which is probably the point of the book anyway

You probably secretly hate your bad qualitities and since you mentioned that your a hypocrite thats probably why you hate the character in the story.

    • Haha yeah, I hate myself (no, srsly). But I mean, looking at the character was like looking at a version of me that's a billion times worse, if that's even possible.

Lol, I didn't hate that book but I thought it was overrated and didnt understand why so many people liked it. I mean, I totally understand how he's depressed, doesn't feel like he fits in with most people or whatever, but I thought that was a fairly common feeling for kids of his age, I guess thats why everyone likes it, but to me it's message was already obvious. it was a funny book though. an yeah, scrotie mcboogerballs haha

I'm glad I wasn't made to read it in school. When I chose to read it for myself, it's one of the few books where I was completely tuned in from the very first paragraph. I just loved his voice.

You could class Holden as spoilt, depressed, bratty, childish, but I forgive him all of that because he's really, really funny. I love the way he sees things.

I know it's a sad book with a sad ending but it's been a book I've loved from the moment I started reading.

What's strange to me is a female liking it. You're the first I've known of. People I've recommended it to have found it very alien and very male. But I think most men have an element of Holden, most of us are blocked off and don't see things as plainly as women, and most of us have similar viewpoints whether we express them as wittily as Holden or not.

P.S. I was made to read Great Expectations and despised it. I love it now, though.

I know this is quite old and I shouldn't be practicing necromancy and stuff, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm a girl and that book is really a Bible to me, I can relate to almost every word of Holden's and I feel like I really get him.

Great book. I find the things I hate most in other people are the qualities I do not like about myself. I think it's normal.

        • Not really, actually. She just seems a little unrealistic to me.
