Is it normal the sound of running water is driving me nuts!

I'm stuck in the middle of a cold spell! I have to keep my water trickling 24/7 so that the pipes don't freeze (again!). I spent a bit of time and effort fucking around unfreezing the pipes already and that sucks! Well it wasn't too bad because of my unbelievable ingenuity, I rigged up quite the solution, but it's still a pain in the ass.

It's been 3 days straight now of this and the noise of it is making me crazy!! It sounds just like when rain "slaps" on rocks. Every. Second. Of EVERY day. And EVERY night. Slap, slap, slap. Slapping in the sink. Slapping in the tub. The damn toilet, I fixed it so that it would run occasionally too so it's water supply wouldn't freeze up. So there's that damn racket added to the slap, slap, slappity slap. And of course the occasional gurgling of the drains.

I can't leave the house. I can't wear earplugs. I can't play loud music. I have the TV on but it does little to nothing to drown out the noise. I tried putting different things in there to catch the water to hopefully change the sound but that only made it worse.

According to the weather report, I have 4 more days that I'll have to deal with this.

is it normal to go nuts from trickling water?

The chinese used to use dripping water as a form of torture, but the drip would be centralized on a specific point, say like the forehead. This would continue over a number of days, weeks maybe, ultimately the recipient would finally go insane. SO at least the water is not dripping on your head

I'm wondering if you were being sarcastic or serious about your 'ingenuity.' However there's a few solutions you should've considered:

1-turn off pipes inside house, open exposed pipes that can freeze and drain them of water.

    2-buy and install heat tape.

3-for the noise, tie a string or tie a spoon to it and use that to give the dripping water a pathway to drop, then you'll have silence.

I really should be paid for all the great advice I give to people and for improving their lives.

    • I was talking about the ingenious ideas I came up with to thaw pipes that had frozen up.

      1. I live here, I need running water.

      2. Heat tape is not an option, I don't have the $ for it right now and even if I did, installing it would be a nightmare that I'm not willing to take on at the current time.

      3. I have cats. Very curious and playful cats. This does not work. It actually causes more problems than it solves.

    Chill out.
Literally. The sound can be relaxing if you want it to be. Calm down, sit down, close your eyes, breathe deeply and listen to the sound. Or don't even listen at all. Just breathe deeply and let your mind drift off.
It's definitely not normal to be as worked up as you are over the sound of running water. You need to calm down, stop being so angry and chill.

no it can't-any unwanted noise can become torturous, so I can agree with the OP on that account.

An articulate posting, but I am truly surprised you could be arsed.
