Is it normal that when i'm caught off guard my chest suddenly feels ice-cold?

When I'm extremely shocked or surprised by something (information or an event), the moment it hits me my heart and upper chest area feel like they've been packed in ice. A few seconds later I feel like I've been dunked in warm water and the sensation goes away. Afterwards my chest continues to hurt and feel uncomfortable for awhile. Does anyone else experience this reaction to surprise?

I've heard the phrase "freeze up" before when referring to a surprise. I think you're normal and that sounds pretty cool.
