Is it normal that when i get really tired, it's hard for me to breathe?

i have a really fucked up sleep pattern. sometimes by the time i go to sleep i'm so tired i'm practically in a coma the instant my head hits the pillow.
but when i'm falling asleep in a situation like that, i usually wake up because i can't breathe. my mind goes completely blank and my breathing gets reaaaallly shallow to the point where i wake up gasping.

i'm pretty sure it's not sleep apnea, because i was tested for this a few years back because my doctor thought it might be related to my depression and inablity to sleep.

has anybody ever experienced this or know why it might be happening?

I have anxiety, & I feel like my chest gets very heavy & hard to breathe when Im tired. Only when Im extremely tired though, like if Ive been up 24 hrs. I too have very weird sleeping patterns, insomnia sometimes.

It wouldn't hurt to be tested again...no one is right 100% of the time. It could also be allergies/sinus, asthma or even anxiety. I'd get a second opinion and good luck.
