Is it normal that this site makes you bitter and indifferent eventually?

I have been here since 2010. When I first signed in, I was quite excited by everything. I read lots of stories, made many posts about important stuff and always gave people kind advices in the comments. When the chat first appeared, I was also quite active there for a time.

However, now I have been growing tired of the site and I take long breaks every now and then. Also, I don't comment as much anymore and I am mostly indifferent about people's stories. It has all become very repetitive, people keep asking the same questions over and over again.

The thing is that... I notice that most of the "seniors" of this site seem to be quite bitter. They just write as if they truly didn't care about anyone anymore. In the best cases, they just troll, but on certain ocassions they can be quite mean as well. In fact, most of the "caring" comments are usually from relatively new members.

And well, I don't know... I just want to know if anyone feels the same and if I should be scared of becoming a bitter bastard as well.

I dont get bitter i only get better. I say my peace and if any want to challenge or attack me, I send them away with their tail between their legs. If anything I get riper!
I'll fart or crap anyone under the table.

  • Me too - I was like that when I first joined several years ago! :D
    It was so much fun!

In all honesty, I do get frustrated now and then with a few negative aspects of IIN. I've taken a several 'breaks' myself; either I lost interest for a while or I was avoiding being trolled. Taking breaks helps stave off bitterness. (:

A lot of the long time regulars (seniors) on this site have to put up with a ridiculous amount of trolling from attention-starved kids; therefore, I can understand why they would start commenting like they no longer cared. Why should they even stick around after tolerating it? Maybe they hope it will improve. Maybe they stay because they've made a few friends and don't want to abandon them. Then again, some good ones end up leaving, and they leave for good - which is always a shame.

Whenever a new member with articulate helpful advice comes along, we should try to do what we can to encourage them to stay and spread their wisdom. The more of them there are, the better this place becomes.

So often you say exactly what I want to say, only better.

I'm very indifferent right now. There is so much crap on here.

Only reason I'm here lately is habit and the good people. There are good people joining up all the time, it's just sometimes hard to see them through the fucktards and spoiled brat young kids.

      • Ha, I think the same thing about your posts! We tend to think a lot alike, eh.

Me too; it's really hard sometimes, isn't it? And it doesn't feel very fair. There used to be a user who had it even worse than any of us and he almost always maintained his cool--for years. I don't know how he did it! I found it pretty inspiring, though.

But, this story and all of the comments one it have reminded me of how I used to feel about this place during my first year of activity. I feel a little bit refreshed because of it (Thanks for making this story, OP!).

I hope you stick around in the long run, despite the shit. :D

        • You are welcome!

I am actually glad that all of you commented and that now I can see that many people are going through the same situation regarding this site!

          • Yes, you're definitely not alone! I imagine it's tough for anyone to give thoughtful, kind advice for as long as you have and not feel at least a little bit blah at the end of it. With so much repetition, it's difficult to avoid indifference.

But, I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding bitterness, since that seems to come with being treated with too much contempt or being trolled. It doesn't happen to everyone and I hope it's never happened to you. :D

Please DO use -ists and -isms. Please use "race" in a context meaning skin colour/ethnicity. Please use textese as much as you want. And when you refer to a deity, feel free to be as specific or non-specific as you want :)

I catch myself becoming bitter at times and I think that I sometimes rush to judgement on some stories. I try to limit my comments and if I see a post that is overwhelmingly negative I'll try to make a positove comment. But it isn't always easy. I try to remember that the poster may be asking a genuine question.

The best solution is to take a break and remember this is only a small piece of what the world has to offer.

    4 reasons

1.After years on the computer you wonder what you are doing with your life. It gets lonely.

2.A lot of arguing/confrontation goes on in this site and bullying.

3.People do ask the same stupid obvious questions over and over. A great example (I am 16 and dating my 40 year old teacher is it normal). Even for countries that this is illegal. Laws are made for a reason.

4.A lot of members do not respect the guidelines and rules set up for this website. Like "must be 18 and over".

The way I use IIN seems very similar to this!:) I guess you could say I'm pretty indifferent to this place at the moment, although not entirely because of the posts or anything. I don't think I'm bitter, although I can be mean on here at times. I don't think many people are bitter here, although I think a lot of people are annoyed at certain types of users, as well as the repetition of posts.

I suppose I used to put more care into my comments, and was kinder in the past; now I'm just getting a bit apathetic, and I'm finding it hard to even talk to members here. Not sure why, because I still like the people here. I'm just not sure what to say to anyone, though. I feel out of touch with IIN. But I can't really speak for everyone, so I'm not sure how they feel.

And I don't think you should be scared about turning bitter. If it gets to that point, I think it's time to move on.

If you become obsessed with "this site," or anything else, you will end up bitter and indifferent.

This is why I took a break. I found myself getting angry and bitter, and that anger and bitterness was affecting my personal life. Hopefully things have changed :)

This is funny, I'm just back from an IIN break. It's funny how most users who commented here agree with the OP. Who are those bitter people then if they're none of the above?????

I've been here for a while now and Im pretty much the same way. I try not to leave mean comments but it happens when I'm angry about something else...which seems to be happening more frequently. I guess I just need to stay away.

I love this site but i'm a newcomer, i've been here for about 3 maby 3 and a half months and I still feel such empathy for some of the posters here and want to leave helpful replies and I still laugh like a madman at some of the replies and in turn get weird looks from my family, but recently a lot of the questions are things I have already tried to help with and a surprising amount of times someone has made the point I was going to make but conveyed the opinion better than I ever could. Plus i'm finding it harder to know what to take seriously now and I overanalyze my replies to people because I think I might sound distant or weird, also I have a problem with insomnia and that's when I'd mainly go on but i'm not doing that now as the last time I was a bit of an arse to someone then felt bad when I reread it. I do love IIN and a lot of the people here though

I spread it out with a bit of give a damn and a little indifference in every comment. This way, both of them should last a couple years.

I also try to just go to the posts I figure I'll care about. If I can't find much to care about I try to care about something different. If I still don't care, I take a short break.

I don't guess I've been here long enough to start feeling bitter, though.

I don't know that I've grown bitter quite yet but I certainly slowed down on commenting since I first got here.

I come here because I enjoy trying to give people advice. If I'm ever growing bitter, I won't have a reason to stay and will just take a break. It's happened once.
