Is it normal that the songs my girlfriend likes hurt my heart?

My (ex)girlfriend likes some cool music, but some of the things she listened too made my chest hurt. For example, I had never heard Black Veil Brides, but when I heard them after she mentioned them, my chest hurt like I found out a person had been hurt. I think it was because I thought of her feeling the way that music is, which is angst-y and depressed. But aside from that, other music makes my stomach hurt or gives me a weird feeling. Nirvana's Unplugged album has such odd guitar tones it makes me uncomfortable to listen to it, even though I like the songs themselves. Does anybody else get an uneasy feeling from certain music?

My ex's favorite musician was Janis Joplin and she introduced me to her music. We were together for seven years. It took me two years before I could listen to Janis again without crying. So, to me, that is normal.

Music is meant to instill some sort of reaction in its audience.

A lot of music I like is kind of sad. I had a boyfriend who listened to nothing but techno one day I threw a cd out his car window... That shit would drive the Sakai lama batty!
