Is it normal that sad music makes me relieve more stress than happy music?

I listen to happy music as well, which makes me forget about stress, makes me look at the positive side of things. It also relieves stress.

But when I listen to sad music, I feel more stress relief than happy music. The feeling/tension is greater in listening to sad music than happy for me.

Is this normal that sad music makes me relieve stress more than happy music?

Maybe the sad music makes your subconscious focus on your problems, which helps to solve them and make you feel better. That's just a random thought though, nothing whatsoever to back it up.

I know a lot of people are irritated by happy music because we perceive the emotions in it as superficial and much less genuine and sincere than we do in sad music. I'm definitely with these people, because I can't stand music that doesn't feel sincere. That's why I like a lot of very naive, idealistic sort of music though, because the songs are both happy and keep their sincerity because they're so naive and there's something I love about that.

Personally I love sad and happy music. A lot my very favourite music is at it's core about sad things, but optimistic as opposed to depressing because it's also about overcoming those obstacles that life gives you. Maybe that's because I have a fundamentally optimistic outlook despite life being far from perfect. Then there's political music, which is usually neither happy or sad just angry :P

I'm the same way. My friends always ask what's wrong with me && when I tell them it makes me happy they look at me krazy?

I suppose it could make you relieve more stress if you are relating to sad music. For me though, I'm the opposite. When someone links me to a song with lyrics that is incredibly sad, I start to relate to the song like anyone else which makes me feel TERRIBLE. I do know a friend who gave me a sad video on Youtube that creatively connected to those who have been bullied and from there, I can understand feeling better because the video shows that other people feel the same way you do. But for music with lyrics? No, keep it away please, I don't like feeling bad. Though music without lyrics that just has slow and deep violin or piano does make me feel pretty relaxed and relieved. I guess its just complicated for me like that.

Happy music doesn't have any negative effects on me. Sonic Unleashed's "Endless Possibility" to me is one as it is very upbeat and persuasive, which makes me feel like going out and accomplishing something. No need to pretend being happy is fake or unrealistic, its good to be happy.

Yeah well when you're depressed it feels like the music you listen to is actually listening to you.

Sad music makes you happy. So do sad movies. It seems weird but there was a study about it a while back. You could look it up if you wanted to.

I get the same thing Hospice by the antlers is the saddest thing I have heard and it's helped me a lot its a concept album about a hospice worker who falls in love with a dying patient. The whole idea is a metaphor though for an abusive relationship the singer peter was in. A beautiful and devastating album, I would recommend it to anyone reading this

Happy music tends to annoy me. I much prefer sad and mellow music. Very relaxing to me.

Mellow music is the one for me, and it tends to be sad, so I guess I sort of agree. Although, mellow and happy can be just as lovely, too. But generally speaking, I've always had a preference for sad music. Not sure why either, because I'm usually a pretty happy person, although maybe that doesn't matter as much as I think it might. I'd say it's normal.
