Is it normal that poor spelling is an instant turn off for me?

Whenever I see an otherwise attractive person spell simple words incorrectly I feel turned off. I make exceptions for individuals with dyslexia and other disorders which may hinder their ability to spell words, but for others it pretty much ends my attraction.

Is it normal?

These days intelligence and grammar are drifting further and further apart because of text speak. It's a natural human evolution though. 6 thousand years ago some guy stopped drawing the whole goat and used the hieroglyph for it instead and some judge mental Egyptian says "OH MY ANKANHATEN! YOU CANT SPELL!"

Doesn't make much sense to me. The only thing it really can tell you about that person is they may be uneducated, but I don't look down on people because of it or think it's a turnoff.

Illiteracy in general is a turn off. But even worse, IMO is those with no common sense. I find it quite uncomfortable to be around people who just make the wrong decision every single time. It's embarrassing to watch.

I think it would inspire me to teach them how to spell correctly . I understand everyone excels in different categories of life , I am sure those people are much better at something besides spelling that I am not .. besides .. spelling doesn't dictate how they treat me or feel about me , I just might have to help them write all my cards for myself is all :P

Yeah, I think the same thing. It happens at work. During a meeting someone (usually young) who seemed to have high potential will be asked to write an idea or concept on the dry wipe board and their spelling and penmanship is like a 6th grader. It certainly doesn't help their image with management.

    • Do you purposely ask them to spell words that you know they don't even know the meaning of, much less the spelling?

      That's "corporate" trolling.

Heheh, no. We just ask them to write/draw what they're trying to say on the board so we can better understand or save it. They start writing and we're like, whoa this dude is practically illiterate!

Is that really what you notice first about a person? Sounds like you spend too much time online. This is something i just don't know about a person. And with spellchecker. I may never know.

Bad spelling equals low intelligence. Bad penmanship often equals high intelligence.
