Is it normal that my senses aren't very sharp?

My senses don't seem to be very sharp, or highly refined. For example, I've been corrected many times for saying the word "pen" when my listener says, "oh, you mean "pin"! It's so annoying! I can see the words are spelled different and have different meanings, but they sound the same to me.

I went to the garden center and asked about Ingelman Ivy. The guy said I don't think we have it. Can you describe it to me. So I described it. He said, "oh, you mean Engelman Ivy". I told him "that's what I said", and he responded with, "no, you said Ingelman Ivy". First I thought what a jerk he was to treat a customer like that, and I also thought what's the difference? I can't hear it.

My taste and sight are just as indistinct .

My wife will fix something for supper and ask if I like it better this way, or the way she prepared it last night. I tell her it was good last night and it still tastes good now. Then she tells me all the things she did to "tweek" it so it would taste better. I can't tell the difference even when I try a taste of both side by side sometimes. Believe me, if it didn't taste good I wouldn't eat it!

I like to think I'm normal, but sometimes I wonder.

The first paragraph sounds like it has nothing to do with your senses. It sounds like you aren't speaking clearly. I wonder if maybe you grew up in a different part of the country from where you currently live. If so your accent or pronunciation might be a little different which could be the issue. Even if that is not the case a speech therapist may be able to help you.

As far as tasting, lots of people do not pick up on minor taste differences. That is very normal. To use an example a lot of people are familiar with, some people will say Coke and Pepsi are the same thing while others wil say they are very different. Sometimes eating a lot of new things and exposing your pallet to different flavors can help this.

Just a thought, if your wife does something to make her cooking better and it is all the same to you anyway. Just tell her you like it better. It won't hurt you, but it will make her feel good. Having her smile and say thank you will probably be nicer than her feeling like she nees to explain to you why your wrong and how they really are different.

I did grow up and learn to talk in a community of second generation immigrants which probably influenced the way they pronounced their words which affected how I heard and repeated those words.

If I lie and tell my wife I like it better today that will just confuse her and complicate things because I told her yesterday that it was good and I liked it, before she made the changes. I could end up telling her everyday that I like it better THIS way rather than yesterday, when in fact she never changes it.

You can definitely work on it. You apparently don't need a speech therapist to correct your pronunciation, a simple homework will do the job. As far as sight goes you should see a doctor. You could try to eat with a blindfold and do other exercises that will sharpen your gustative senses.

I don't know about the blindfold. That sounds kind of weird. I did try eating with chopsticks recently and found it helped with my dexterity.

I have a knife sharpener that works very well. Want to borrow it and try sharpening your senses with it?

The other respondents seemed to misunderstand me completely but at least they were trying to be helpful. You're just being facetious! Thanks for the offer!
