Is it normal that my parents, mostly my mother controls my social life?

I'm almost 19 but I still have to get permission from my mother to go out or meet a friend. And most of the time, permission in denied. I do understand that she wants to keep me away from negative people and effects but it isn't useful always. Added to that, I haven't been able to maintain a good relationship with any of my friends and all my best friends ditched me in the end.

I have a couple of friends who have parents like that, however, when they turned 18 they were pretty much free to do what they want, as long as they told their parents. They weren't asking permission, just informing them. Have you thought about just confronting her about this? Telling her that you're old enough to make decisions and have a social life?

    • No, I haven't thought of confronting her because her impression of people generally tends to be correct and I got into trouble when I went against her intuition. Trouble with people, not with her.

Have you thought about introducing your friends to her? Perhaps then she could judge them for herself and see that you've made good choices in friendship.

What was her impression of them? Cause I mean, if it was something bad, then why do you hang out with them? If it was good, then your mom has nothing to worry about.

How were they automatically free at 18? Unless they moved out :?

Alright fair enough they're not really free. I guess I was just looking at it from how my parents treat me, and also how my friends parents treat them. When I turned 18 my Dad said that I am responsible for my own actions. If I want to go out and get drunk, alright, it's a terrible idea, but he has no say in what I can and can't do. I'll learn from my mistakes. But yeah you're right, unless you've moved out you're not really free; I was just using my parents way of teaching, which I understand, now, that it is not the same as everyone elses.
