Is it normal that my mother gossipped and complained about me to her friends?

When I was eighteen, my mother would call her friends to go on long-winded rants about how she thought I'd turn out to be a "failed" child. She'd outline as many shortcomings as she can think of, exaggerate them and play up her own merits for sympathy and praise from her friends. IIN?
