Is it normal that my boyfriend likes to give presents "from the heart"?

So my boyfriend and I have been together for one year. I am well aware that he is a college student without a job (well, he makes money through his uncle on occasion, but not a stable job like me). For my birthday and other holidays he always makes me stuff, he calls it "something from the heart". And I must admit, they are pretty thoughtful and I know he puts a lot of time into it. Some of the stuff includes a poem book, photo albums of us, pictures in frames, and a box. He told me that for his birthday, all he wants is me and something made from the heart.
Do you think that his gifts "from the heart" are just an excuse not to buy me anything? What is your stance on this?

Why does it matter what other people think? Do *you* like it?

  • I prefer homemade or sentimental gifts to bought gifts. They cannot be replaced.

Its not an excuse to not buy you something. You said he's a college student without a job, so of course this is normal. He probably knows he can't afford anything expensive, but he still wants to show you how much he cares. It's actually really sweet.

    I think that sounds amazing.

It sounds like he's doing the best he can, in his situation and he is trying to relieve you of the responsibility of having to "buy" him a gift. If you aren't as creative and artsy as he, and would prefer to buy him a gift (or not) then just do as you see fit. I think he's a great guy from your description and I'd hate to see something as trivial as this screw up your relationship.

Buying something is easy. Regardless of whether or not he has money, would you prefer something from the store or something he spent time and effort making. I'd rather have gifts "from the heart" from a girl any day.

I honestly think the expense is apart of it, but he still loves you so he wants to show you he cares even though he cannot afford it. I think he would feel bad if you bought him something considering he couldn't do the same for you. So he wants the same type of thing he gets you. It's very thoughtful because he is showing his appreciation, and love for you, even though he cannot afford it. You are a good girlfriend for not thinking that he needs to buy you something. Many girls are like that.

    Best of luck!!

Well what do you think I should get him for his birthday? I was thinking of baking him some sort of desert (not sure how that'll turn out) and buying 2 movie tickets (one for him, one for me)

He gives his organs?! Aw... that's sweet... Nah, just joking. But it is very nice of him. *squeezes pillow* That's what I do when I'm happy!
