Is it normal that it makes me mad that people continue to have children when...

They can't afford it?

I mean, that's kind of not fair to the child. If you cannot afford any more children, do not have more children. It's not that hard to avoid having unwanted children most of the time.

If you have the means, and want 10 kids, go right ahead! That's how it should be in my opinion.

It's normal that it makes you mad. I believe in the welfare state and I believe if you fall victim to circumstances outside your control (i.e. losing your job, being disabled, in some cases being a single parent) then the civilised thing to do is for society to help. But when you deliberately enter a situation (knowing the risks at the time you entered the situation), it's difficult not to feel taken advantage of as a taxpayer.

Less than half the population of my country works. Those who work full-time are an even bigger minority. As one of this minority, I do put food on the table of people I don't know and am liable to never know. I do this uncomplainingly because I believe in it. But if someone says, "Do anything you want. Someone else is paying for it", it does tend to reduce my sympathy level. The worst thing, though, is if people who receive welfare through no fault of their own get tarred because of the minority who abuse it.

    • Yeah, I understand that it's necessary for some cases, but there's always those who take advantage of it. That's what aggravates me. Don't get me wrong, it can be a good thing!

Oh, exactly! That's my feeling too. Helping people is a good thing but someone who'd take advantage of it seems doubly bad to me.

I like the people who claim they're a single parent, have 3 and 4 kids, and only work part-time if at all. Even though they have a live-in making good money, they get free housing, free food, and spend their money on their wants not needs. Their kids are the ones wearing Jordans in school that everyone else is paying for.
When tax time comes around they get $4500 or more because they game the system.
And if you want to make the handouts contingent on passing a drug test it's unfair to them? What a joke!

          • yep, this is the kind of thing that makes me mad! Seeing people pull food stamps out of their Coach wallets; don't even get me started on that!

They have kids because they have nothing better to do, it's as simple as that. Try to look at it through their perspective. What else would they do with the time they have?

  • I agree. Some people have kids for very selfish reasons.

I only want 1 more kid but my finances won't support it i'm barely getting by as it is. I don't want my son to grow up an only child i think kids need siblings.
