Is it normal that i wish i lived in the 1950s instead?

The 1950s. When men were still men, women knew their place, kids were spanked, commies jailed, smoking healthy, Elvis the incarnation of the devil himself. Yeah, seems far better than the crap today.

Be careful what you wish for. We also had segregated schools, had to do duck-and-cover drills for the Red Fear, and friends dying of childhood diseases that are curable today.

You'll note I said I wouldn't want to live then and they went too far with crap. I want a decent meal and a cool car-- why you gotta drag up all THAT garbage?

But we’re had asthma without that inhalers of today. I had a good childhood friend who was rushed to the hospital for an asthma attack and never came back.

        • Oh. :( Yeah, that's pretty much the only downside I can think of tbh. I wonder how many more would have died if this pandemic had happened back then instead of now.

    darefu has a better view:

Modern medicine did not exist. Birth control did not exist. Condoms were rare. Polio and smallpox was rampant enough to be a very serious concern.

Very few employment options for woman.

Physical and Sexual Abuse was very common and was not even investigated in most cases even if reported.

Many forms of discrimination were hard facets of society (way way way worse than today: I cannot every imagine going back to accepting the things that were normal back in the mid 1960's).

I suggest that you have a very distorted view of what life was really like in those years.

What world do some of you people live in.

Dadnscal, started to say it but I'm not sure it came out strong enough.

Buying a house while working at a McDonald's(entry level) has never really been an option but closer now than ever. Depends on where you were. Using USA figures you were lucky to be making $1 per hour and expected to work 50 to 60 hours per wk. Only real good or big companies paid more for overtime. An 800 or 900sf house was normal for a family to live in, and cost about 20 grand. About ten years of your income. Compare that to todays 1500sf and income of 29k that's equals a 290000 house.

Peedos hadn't been invented? WTF! More kids were molested and spouses abused back then. It was a lot of times considered a family issue and not addressed.

Many laws were put in place over the last 40 to 50 years because of the post WWII problems. People had their eyes opened to world problems and even came up with a saying that still exist today. If they saw something they didn't agree with or think was right it was said, "there should be a law against that".

At first things probably made a lot of sense however, imo, the cancel culture is the obvious long term out come of it. "I don't agree with it so you shouldn't be allowed to do it".

Now don't get me wrong, I think a lot of things were really great from the 50s. Cars, music, Tv, space program (birth of our technology). Even sexual awakening, and racial equally really got kick started then.

Also remember most credit was reserved for houses, you didn't have credit cards and loans for everything if you wanted it, you better save to get it.

Depending on your view, other positive or negitive factors: You would not have your smart phones, computers, and games of today. LGBT+ would be back in the closet.

I dislike a lot of the world problems of today but previous times weren't so great either.

I wish we could just live and let live but that's naive. We each have strong feelings about what's right and wrong and wish to impose those views on others.

I don't know that I'd wanna actually LIVE then, but we sure as hell could stand some SERIOUS 50's-ing up in this country. They had a lot of the right ideas, they just went WAY too heavy on some of that shit. And from an aesthetic standpoint? FUCK yeah, bring ALL that shit back.

As was pretty much all the best stuff. What I wouldn't give to taste a real, pre regulations, all American ten pound cheeseburger from a place that looked like a towering glass neon bedecked spaceport!

And glass bubble domes, big chrome monster jaw grilles, huge luxurious cruiseship interiors! Giant V8 engines that sound like pots of smooth, boiling oil! And don't forget the dual headlights and two and three tone paintjobs! Those beautiful old pastel art colors, too! Whitehall tires wrapped around huge chrome caps, each one so tall and fat you could run down an entire marching band and never even feel a bump!

That is not true. McDonald's has always been a starting job at or near minimum wages. People got jobs at a McDonald's, Dairy Queen, A&W Root Beer, and assorted other restaurants as their 1st jobs so they could use the experience to get another job that paid a lot more.

However, there were plenty of other jobs a male could get and make enough money to buy a house.

There were very few jobs available for females other than babysitter, caregiver, nurses, secretaries, and typists.
