Is it normal that i was forced to sign confidentiality agreement?

So I recently joined this popular food manufacturing company in the world and they made me to sign confidentiality agreement on their secret recipe. Even though I didn't like the idea, since it was mandatory, I worked there just for three months and left the job. I didn't want to work in a place where the employees are not trusted. Is it normal?

Yes it is normal for a company to protect its assets. You were not singled out, everybody would have to sign that document.

I think it's normal when it comes to the secret recipe kind of thing. I don't like the idea of nondisclosure agreements, because I think people should be free to expose abuses, and unethical practices. I love whistleblowers!

You are exactly the reason why theres an agreement. Whistle blowers are only useful when they blow a white collar crime or they are doing something illegal. If the recipe is safe then dont talk about it or risk a damn fine. Geez I love freedom as a libertarian but sharing everyone's secret recipe "for the people" sounds straight communism.

When I said, "I think it's normal when it comes to the secret recipe kind of thing", I meant that it's normal under those circumstances to request for an employee to sign a confidentiality agreement.

NO, a person who steals a secret recipe, and leaks it out is not what I mean when I say whistleblower!!!

When I say whistleblower I mean some one who brings to light abuses, and unethical practices.

    • Sorry, I can't reveal it. This is why I hate the agreement.

That's why they can't trust you.

Exactly. I never trust a corporation that trusts peons.

        • If you don't know, secret recipes can't be patented anywhere. It all boils down to trust. Ethically, it's immoral to force an employee to sign the document. They could have fired me right away, but why force someone?

The company didnt force you to sign it. You could have walked away.

If you cant love a company that doesnt trust you, you ain't going to find a lot of big corporations to work for. It's simple buisness, the company just doesnt want to go under because of some loose lipped employee. As we say in the navy loose lips sink ships. Loose tweets sink fleets.

I have a friend who had to sign a confidentiality agreement when she worked at McDonalds, promising not to reveal secret recipes. She promised it wasn't people.

Those 47 herbs and spices are top secret dammit! I've never trusted Basil, that flowery wimp. And Sage ain't so sage, if you know what I'm sayin'.

Keep it under your hat now.
