Is it normal that i want to recreate things i heard before?

I'm in school and have been tasked with writing a short book and suddenly couldn't come up with an original idea to write with. All I have are just thoughts of making some sort of recreation of Stephen King's IT or others things that I remember reading, watching, and thinking a lot about (SCP, Stranger Things, etc.). Could you guys/gals tell me if this is normal or not?

  • Yes, this is very, very normal. If you've never written a story before, it makes sense you would look to stories you already know. My advice would be to take a few stories you know with similar plot structures, (say, three horror movies you like,) pick and choose the parts you want to incorporate into your story and then come up with an original protagonist and antagonist. If you find yourself working too closely to the original stories, change small details until as much of it as possible is your own. It's more work than just copying down a story word for word, but you'll get a better grade and I'll be surprised if you don't find you enjoy it; if not the process, the end result.

There is a saying. Good artists imitate, great artists steal. The things you have named are all themselves recreations of stories dating back to pre-biblical times.

It is not that so few unique stories exist. The limitation is in our capacity to understand. Ultimately all a story is is a doorway a reader can walk through into their own mind.

However for the sake of a school assignment I'd suggest sufficiently altering it or recreating something you're certain your teacher has not seen.
