Is it normal that i want to give this guy a chance?

I know this guy has liked me for years, but just this year we started talking. He's always nice to me and we only went out once about 2 months ago. After we went out, his friend (who is also my friend) started warning me about him. He said that I shouldn't date him because he uses girls and doesn't want a real relationship. I also heard many similar rumors. I didn't know what to think. But anyway I laid off this guy that likes me, only talking to him here and there. Later on I found out that my friend had told him that I liked someone else, which was a lie to get him to back off of me. I know my friend was just looking out for me, but I was upset that he did this because now it's going to be harder for me to find out if he wants a real relationship or not. After he heard this he did stop talking to me slightly, but recently we've been talking a lot more.

I want to give him a chance, but i'm scared of what people would think if I went out with a guy with a bad reputation...

    I think you should do whatever you please, but I don't think you should take into consideration what others might think about it. Living your life worried about what others might think about your actions is not a very healthy way to live.

    Find a monastery so you can cloister yourself within and bake fruit cakes all year for sale at Christmas time resulting in funds to keep the monastery open and to assist homeless waifs of the world.

    Well it really depends wheter you want a serious or casual relationship. He seems like he wants a casual one based on what your friend told you, that "he uses girls and doesn't want a real relationship".
