Is it normal that i want the us gov't to invest in a massive railway system?

I was hoping that we Americans could get the American government to build both a Trans Atlantic Railway System as well as a Trans Pacific Railway System. Basically, we could start of the eastern coast in the state of Maine, Connecticut, or Massachusetts (Oregon, California, or Washington on the West side) and extend both railways to respective continents:
Trans Atlantic Railway is to connect to Eurasia, Antarctica, and Africa
Trans Pacific Railway is to connect to Africa, Australia, and South America

First, the railroads could be built and as they're built, steel tubes could surround all the railroads in order to protect the Trans Atlantic and Trans Pacific Railway from damage by storms. Then after all railroads are built, they can extend into every Capital of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and even extentions into Antarctica (to make access to research stations more easy).

What do you guys and gals think? Pretty good idea, huh? I think so. :)

it will never happen is our lifetime.

Unfortunately 2 things work against that idea. #1 most of our states are bigger then most countries. making an effective and efficient Rail system that much harder to do

#2 the "american dream/ideal" was to blame for many things wrong with our culture. everything was about status and "keeping up with the jones"

after the boom post WWII it was all the status to go from the big house and yard with a picket fence to eating meat from like every other day to 3 times a day. To everyone owning a car.

The US is fundamentally build on everyone owning cars and the roadways and cheap oil prices. Even now USA's fuel prices are twice as low as other countries. If you really want a mass transit railways you need to live in a large city really

Planes are cheaper, so everybody flies. Ocean freight is moved with lower cost by container ships. Your idea would never come close to paying for itself.
