Is it normal that i walked into a uniqlo, but then left dazed and confused?

Last week I was visiting a friend, and at a nearby mall they have this clothing store called Uniqlo. The storefront looked slick and clean and kind of trendy, and I was expecting like a Gap or Abercrombie or something.

But woah man, it wasn't.

Basically they put the men's close and women's clothes together on the same shelves and they look almost identical. I guess the proportions were a little different, but it was almost impossible to tell. The clothes would probably look fine on a woman I guess, but for a guy it's extremely effeminate. They would put a male mannequin and a female mannequin next to each other wearing almost an identical outfit and it was hard to tell which was which.

I kept thinking I had stumbled into the women's section by accident, but the joke was on me! It was so confusing to look though clothes on a rack and have to wonder whether or not this was supposed to be for a guy or for a girl.

I checked online and strangely enough none of the reviews mention this. They were mostly positive.

Is it normal?

It's probably a store for masculine women and feminine men. Why are you confused? Because your traditional sense of masculinity has been broken? New styles can take a while to get used to. I bet if you go in there a few more times you'll conform and find something you like. It's how we were made.

    • They have so many of these weird puffy vests. It's like they want Back to the Future's vision of 2015 to come true so bad.

Yes, they've already created the Back to the Future Nike. It seems that is what someone wants.

I've been in UniQlo in the UK a few times and found it easy enough to tell what was menswear and what was womenswear.

I see what you did there with the title...

The company specialises in unisex clothing and seems to really be focusing on this in its most recent collections. The styles for men, don't really seem to be for the rugged and thick built, it all seems to be for thin males with metro-sexual stylings. I think it's normal to be slightly confused if you didn't know what the company specialised in or wasn't aware of the recent collections.

If you want good menswear go to Topman.

    • Yes, I understand that.

But the clothes looked way too feminine for a man to wear. You know how there's been a recent trend to make female versions of men's clothes that are fashionable for women to wear (like jeans, jackets, and suits, etc.)? But you can still kind of tell they were tailored for a woman? It would be like if a man tried to wear one of those female tailored versions. It was very disorienting.

I also noticed that all the male models that they used to wear the clothes are very thin and unshapely, almost like a child.

Oh I see. I had never heard of it, that's why I looked it up. Its a japanese company right? They aren't exactly shapely people. Maybe that has something to do with it.
