Is it normal that i think reproducing should be authorized by the government?
Ever since I was little I always thought it was weird that just ANYONE who wants a kid can go ahead and have one regardless of how prepared they are, how mature, how mentally stable...and look what happens. Kids are beaten, molested, neglected, traumatized, sometimes even seriously hurt/killed by parents. I know the last one doesn't happen that often but it DOES happen. The majority of parents I know are young people who would rather drop the kid off with their grandparents and go drinking or whatever else; they didn't plan for their kid and they aren't too happy about having one, and they are doing the bare minimum to take care of them.
This is my idea for a future society, and I think it would work. Lets pretend its for the colony they want to start on Mars, and they're thinking of ways to keep the population under control and start a better society than the one on Earth.
I think it would be best for the government to regulate and have to "approve" people who want to become parents, just like they would at any adoption agency, to make sure they're suitable prospective parents. They'd have to make enough to support the child, they would have to be OLD ENOUGH, they'd have to go through psychological testing to make sure they aren't a pedophile or something, and they'd only be allowed up to 2 children per household until those kids grow up, then they could have 2 more. Now these are just rough ideas of how it would work, off the top of my head.
In order to keep people from having unauthorized pregnancies, most likely the women would go through a routine operation when they're pre-pubescent, in which the doctor would insert some kind of birth control device, like the ones we have now that prevent pregnancy for 6 years. It would have to be replaced every so often until the person is approved for a pregnancy.
(I know this sounds harder on the woman, and I'm a woman myself, but I'm only suggesting that method because I don't know of any other thing a guy could do except for a vasectomy which, as far as I know, isn't reversible.)
So does anyone else think this might be a good idea? I know that people have a "natural born right" to procreate- I KNOW that. But to me, having a child, being able to raise someone who is totally dependent on you and who will love you despite all you might put them through, is a PRIVILEGE, and its something that a lot of people don't appreciate, or deserve. Anyway, opinions please!
