Is it normal that i think racism would end if people got a sense of humor?

I live in the U.S. I'm white and I have very close black friends, Mexican friends etc.

I call my black friends niggers, they call me cracker. I told my half-Mexican friend that he needs to roof half of my garage. He told me that my black friends would just steal the shingles...who then proceeded to remind me that I can't jump high enough to see the roof anyway, so who'd know any different?

We give each other shit about screwing each others' moms, wives, and girlfriends...even though we're not. Seriously...what's the difference?

In a world where so many people are so sensitive, and act like they're walking on eggshells...wouldn't it be awesome if we all just let loose and teased each other about our stereotypes? I mean fuck me...lighten up.

I hear ya and i'm with ya, though I don't think racism will ever end, but some people are scarred by events that they personally were not a part of and do not find such things humorous.

There was an incident here in Australia few years ago where white people performed a song on a variety television show wearing black makeup pretending to be the Jackson 5. Harry Connick Jnr was one of the guest judges on the show that night and he was appalled at the act, deeming it as racist. But then there was that movie with the Wayan brothers called "White Chicks", where the black brothers wore white makeup, and that was a comedy and nothing was said about it. So it really confuses me as to where the line is drawn between humour and offence.

Yeah remember when that guy from Seinfeld got mad at those black guys for heckling him during his standup comedy so he called them the n word. Everybody was on his case. Yeah he shouldnt have said it. But Chris Rock says cracker all the time and no one makes a big deal of it. It doesnt bother me but it makes you wonder why though.

It depends on the race. Some races get more privilege. Some minority groups get special treatment. So you have a level of race of who we can and can not insult, when and how this is ok. We do not only have this with race it goes for religion, jobs and other things. Most people know what these imaginary levels are. So they just try not to say certien things at certien times. It is kind of like the borders for certien areas. You do not see them but you know where they are and you see them on a map.

What you described is mildly racist. If we have a team of skin heads hanging black people you can not just laugh it off. Hitler sending an army to invade is not something you can just laugh off. Groups like black patherns are not something you just laugh off. You do not understand what racism can lead to. Calling someone a wetback is ok rude. Killing a bunch of Mexicans in the the name of you race DOES NOT GO AWAY IF YOU MAKE IT INTO COMEDY! Think about the consequences of your scenario. It is simple to see why this solution would fail.

    • You have issues.

Nowhere in this post did I refer to skinheads, Hitler, Black Panthers, or killing Mexicans.

If you pulled all of that out of a text describing a melting pot of friends reveling in their differences and making fun of stereotypes, and how ridiculous they are...maybe you're the source of more hatred than you're willing to admit.

You said racism would go away if we just laughed it off. You can not laugh off lynching, Hitler, skinheads, and panthers and hate crime. So laughing about the matter does not make it go away. That is racism and that is not a joke. Your post title is (IIN that I think racism would end if people got a sense of humour?) Please explain what is funny about lynching and killing people for the colour of their skin? That is RACISM. The one you claim can go away if you had a sense of humour. Its not very funny and you seem to think so.

        • Keep going. You're doing more to prove my point than anything I could say.

You're so blinded by hatred that you can't see it.

I'm among a group of friends who see the humor in making fun of stereotypes, and we laugh it off. People like you, who are so blinded by rage, look for malice in every spoken and written word, that you associate hatred with friendly banter, perpetuating hatred.

          Thank you for the confirmation.

Well if your theory proves true try it. Why don’t you go to every racist group in the world and say "Hey guys lets just laugh about this" see if they listen to you. It does not really work that way.

Extreme prejudice and racism is not something you can stop so easily. So I am sorry for pointing out the obvious flaws in your story. Ignoring something does not mean it is fixed. So you are lying to yourself. You being ignorant does not make me hateful.

You are wilfully ignoring something very obvious so you can make yourself seem right. Pretending you are right does not make it so. So think through everything before you claim this to be a perfect solution. When someone thinks of a solution they think of all the scenarios. You choose to ignore many of them to make yourself seem more intelligent. So no this is not a reasonable solution to the issue.

Before you propose something why don't you think it through?

Also my irritation is at your stupidity. I am not trying to start a race war.

            • I was very much appreciating your oppositional input.

Then you proved your maturity level by resorting to personal insult. I'm leaving that up, to let yourself prove who you are to the rest of the community.

              Thanks again.
