Is it normal that i think it's okay for people to choose their child's gender?

Let's say that a couple wants to have a son (After 3 daughters) and the only way of reaching that goal is IVF/PGD. Alright and the couple undergoes it and has that baby boy they long desired for. I know this may sound bad, but hear me out: I think that you should have more say when you have birthchildren because it prevents the birth of an unwanted baby and it fulfills a expecting parent's want for the child he or she desires. Now let's say that a person wanted one of each (a baby boy and a baby girl or vice versa in birth order). Since the person is wanting both genders, then wouldn't it be okay if the person underwent IVF/Gender Selection to make that a reality? Personally, I'd have to say "Yes". I support GS because if I were to ever become a mom, I'd want to undergo it and have a daughter and a son. My vision of the "Perfect Family" consists of a biological daughter, biological son, adopted daughter, and adopted son. Does that mean I'm a bad person? Well, one can argue that wanting distinct genders of children (or both as forementioned) is unethical and you should take whatever's given to you but I'd argue back that in the end, it's the single person's decision (or couple's) and that they should be able of having their "Dream Family". If the parents are happy, then the kids born will be happy too. That's good right? That's why I support Gender Selection.

  • Sets back gender equality.... And look at places like China where having a son is prized. I honestly think something's need to be left alone. If you don't want your child because they're the "wrong" gender, you shouldn't be procreating. When it comes to having children I think the only concerns should be regarding its health.

EDIT: I believe there are some genetic diseases where women are only the carriers and men actually have the disease, only in cases like that should the couple be allowed to pick the gender.

I would choose a boy. If its not hurting anything why not.

I think it's okay, but I also think I would find it to be an unsympathetic act for a parent to choose so. If the parents are going to love and care for the child that is born then I guess there is no problem.

About it being unsympathetic, I have trouble putting into words why. In any case, it seems an odd biological luxury to be able to choose the sex of your child, and I can easily see it as a bit spoiled.

I always found the practice strange. It reminds me of customised engineer babies, where parents can choose every aspect of their engineered baby. It's creepy. It falls into the territory of scientists/people playing god.

I totally support this. I don't understand why anyone but religious nutters would object. The fact that it's illegal in some places is appalling. It's another example of the government telling us what we can do with our own bodies.
