Is it normal that i think dog people are less accepting than cat people?

I grew up with dogs at home, but since I left my parents house I have only had cats. I love cats and dogs equally, but I prefer cats because I have a busy lifestyle and I don't want to have to take them out to go to the bathroom. Cats just go in their litter box without any help from me. I have observed in general over the years that many dog people (people who have dogs) do not like cats or even vocally say they hate them, while most cat people (people who have cats) like dogs and cats. Is there a characteristic often shared by dog people that makes them less accepting of cats? Or is there a characteristic often shared by cat people that makes them more accepting of dogs?

    it's true, because you have to be a more patient and open-minded type of person in order to understand and accept that a cat's way of expression is different, so cat people tend to be more thoughtful while strictly-dog people usually don't have the mind for that sort of thing, they just want someone to make them feel important all the time...

    Totally notice this too! It kinda bothers me. Sometimes I feel like people who hate cats are somehow inferior emotionally/mentally. It's like they can only be in a relationship with an animal if he/she is completely subservient to you and doesn't require more respect and attention to their more sensitive needs. I love both dogs and cats, and am even a "dominate/dominating" man, but I still love cats and respect them. Cats seem to have a regal quality, like they are aristocrats/very noble, whereas dogs seem to have a different kind of nobility, a kind of loyal comradeship, like comrades in war.

    To me dogs are like having a toddler around. Noisy, excitable, messy. Cats are more like a teenager. Self absorbed, moody, only interested in you when they want something and then they go back to worshipping themselves when they get it.

    I'm more of a dog person but I like cats as well. My husband is the same as me. I don't know why there even needs to be any rivalry between dog people and cat people.

    Just to name a few characteristics I’ve observed:

    borderline masochism—from incessantly cleaning up piles of waste from an animal that can’t ever and will never clean up after itself;

    co-dependency--- resulting from the illusion of getting unconditional love and being clung to by an animal that if given an inch will take the whole nine yards and dominate its owner;

    Anthropomorphism: leading to less interaction with humans…

    try watching ‘It’s me or the dog” on the Animal Planet Channel sometime and see the sad state of the human race…..

      Yes, I often observe cats taking their litter boxes to the bin and emptying them?

    I have cats and a dog, and I think both make great pets, but they're different from each other. My dog is like a little child, she's needy and pouts when we leave her at home. She's especially attatched to my mom and pines for her when she's at work. She's usually well-behaved though. Our cats love us, but they don't care so much if we leave for a while. Also they pretty much learned on their own to go to the door when they want outside. Anyway I don't entirely agree with OP..many people are both cat and dog people.

    I disagree. I think people who only have cats don't understand dog owners and people who only have dogs don't understand cat owners. Both make wonderful (but different) pets.

    Dogs are stupid, dirty, loud, obnoxious, and high-maintenance.

      I'd argue but I think I'll just roll my eyes.

    It is a sort of "them and us" mentality, a friendly rivalry between dog and cat people. I've heard a lot of cat people "hating" on dogs as well, just as much as the other way around. There has been a lot of dog-hate from cat people just from the comments on this story.

    If your observation is correct, I think that, at one time or another, because dogs are more "human-centric" than cats, everyone has spent a good deal of time with dogs, even if they don't own one. Therefore, a lot of cat people also like them. If you don't own a cat, however, you probably hardly ever come into contact with one, so you don't like them as much.

    That said, from the amount of criticism toward dog people from cat people just on these comments, the OPs "observation" is a total joke.

    I LOVE all animals and grew up with dogs. When I got my first cat I didn't have the best experience, it was really mean. When I got my second cat it was one of the sweetest animals I've come across. In my opinion cats are more affectionate than dogs, but I love both. :)

    Dog people don't like cats because cats just lay around, rip up your carpet, crap in a box in your house and stink it all up, and they are always moody.

    Everybody likes dogs because they're smarter.. you can teach them tricks, take them out to the park or the beach, play games like fetch. Dogs can tell your mood and they act accordingly.

    Cats are for lazy lonely people

    I don't like cats because they're never really part of the family, they don't make an impact on everything.
    We have two dogs and they changed our family for the good.

    • It's completely the opposite with my cats, they are very much a part of the family and they love attention given to them. They play, curl up next to us, try to get our attention etc.

      My late cat was also very much a part of my family, I still regard her as such.

    The reason cat people accept both cats and dogs and dog people only accept dogs is because dogs are superior.
