Is it normal that i never say i love you first?

When I’m talking to friends and family, they always say I love you. I’ve never said it first though. My friends always say ‘I love you’ after we’re done talking and are saying goodbye to eachother. I feel weird when people say that because I don’t know which way they mean it. Sometimes I don’t say it back and just reply with ‘bye!’ because i get so nervous.

It depends on a lot factors. If it's family or relatives it's quite okay and expected to saY "I love you" or just simply "love you".

If it's a male friend and you are both straight it's a little weird to say it.

If it's a close female friend saying "love you" is fine and is telling the woman you value your friendship with them.

I remember in my late teens I knew this girl who I had deep feelings for but had never said "love" to her. I was in the hospital recovering from an injury and wrote her a letter (this was WAY before home computers) and signed off with "Your friend John" because I was too shy to write "Love John" at the end. She wrote back and I got a "dear John" letter back. Her feelings for me were obviously quite deep and she was hurt by me calling her just a friend.
