Is it normal that i never believe people when they compliment my appearance?

Basically what the question says. I never believe people when they compliment my appearance--whether it's on my clothes, makeup, or just my natural features. Actually, I always think they're lying and laughing inside. When people compliment my appearance (and I'm not saying it's a lot or a little) I always think they're actually being sarcastic and making fun of me.. Is this normal?

Its all too common but it's not normal. You probably think your ugly which is why you simply cannot accept people complimenting you on your appearance.

Don't you think its self-centered to believe that everyone who pays you a compliment, is really trying to pull one over you? They are trying to make you feel good about yourself, but you think they are sarcastic and offensive?

Don't get me wrong though, I've met a few crazy people who do compliment people but talk smack behind their backs.

I'm the same, when people say i'm pretty or cute i usually think they are hypocrite or trying to comfort me because of my low self-esteem. I got asked to do a couple photoshoot and i could never do it..it's like i can't believe it. Probably because we all focus so much on our flaws... but maybe it's not as bad as we think.

I always smile and say thanks, but in the back of my head I'm thinking "shut up, you lying asshole". But ONLY if it's something I'm insecure about.
If somebody compliments a new shirt I just got and love, then I'll definitely believe them.

With out knowing your age it's hard to say really. When I was a teenager and anyone paid me a compliment or if a memeber of the opporsite gender tried to talk to me I used to think they're taking bets to see who's first to pick up the dog/munter of the group. I suppose we're all terrified of public humiliation as a teenager. I've thankfully lost touch now with my shy insecure neveous and sobre teenage version of myself, and now when anyone gives me a compliment. I simply say "thanks" as to be dismisive could also be embarrasing to the person who's paying you the compliment. xx

I used to feel the same way.

Then I realized that really, I'm just a tomboy and I'd rather do anything else with my time than worry much about my appearance.

Why would people compliment your appearance as a joke..?! If ppl say you're pretty than you better believe them

I feel the same. Hell, I was offered a modelling contract but I don't find myself "beautiful" but then again,, i used to be quite large as a child. Sometimes events from when you're a child can affect you in your adulthood.
You need to know though, that everyone is beautiful/gorgeous/sexy/cute etc in their own way and if they wanted to "take the piss" outta you, they would just say "fuck you're ugly" and laugh. The End. :)

This is normal. I think a lot of people were like this at some point in their life. For me, I've personally stopped caring about what people say. If you like me I'll be happy, if you don't I won't really care.

Really? From what I've read on your comments you come off as this extremely confident man who hates gender inequality. May I ask why you don't believe others when they compliment you?

      • I'm half and half. I think I look good, but when it comes to believing other people, I doubt my appearance. It might be because I don't trust many people, so I don't know if they are speaking truthfully.

I don't get emotional over it, though.
