Is it normal that i'm finding it really hard to get into a certain band?

I have a mate at university and we both love the same music. But now he's trying to get be into a band I'm finding hard to enjoy - Iron Maiden. I don't hate them - I do feel they're a pretty good band. But it's just hard to make them a favourite. Because the whole Iron Maiden thing doesn't really make me satisfied.

I find their album cover art too gruesome for more taste. A lot of IM cover show a huge ghoul called Eddie ripping people to shreds or stabbing people and it's morbid, and in one he's being operated on and you see all his innards being taken out and it's cringing. I don't want to associate myself with such grotesque art.

I also find their songs too similar to each other. Their songs are about eight minutes each and to listen to constant, boring riffs and overlong solos that aren't very exciting. The vocals also feel rather annoying after a while. The only two songs with a feel have an actual good riff and tune are Can I Play With Madness (it sounds like pop rock in a way) and Dream of Mirrors (which is very bluesy and pretty good). Aces High and Alexander the Great aren't too bad either.

And the live shows - as far as I'm concerned also contain lots of blood and guts and live torture sessions, and lots of angsty stuff. It's not my thing. I have heard though that the band themselves are really nice and educated people in real life.

Now I've listened to their music, I've made many attempts to hear certain songs multiple times but I'm not excited by it. But then if you give me any Led Zeppelin or The Who song, I'll be dancing instantly.

Also, he wants me to get into Metallica and Judas Priest in the near future as well... I'm too afraid to say "No, I don't like this kind of music" to him, because we've always liked exactly the same bands and genres from the Beatles to world music to even video game music. I'm eclectic but Maiden doesn't fit into my taste unlike the 100+ other acts I love.

Why is this the case and is it normal, and does it matter if I don't like the band?

  • You're normal. It took me a quite a long while to get into bands like Maiden. You have to try and soak up the heavy guitar but then eventually you'll wonder why you never liked it.

Oh, and please don't try to get into death metal. Or grindcore, or deathgrind, or all those other pointlessly awful genres. You'll thank me.

If you don't like them, you'll have to tell him at some point. Sounds like you're nervous about how he'll react, but if he's worth staying friends with he won't mind.

  • What's wrong with Judas Priest? Yet Metallica and Iron Maiden I understand.
