Is it normal that i'm devastated about the death of someone i don't know?

This little 4 year old named Derrick Robie was killed by 13 year old Eric Smith in 1993. I never knew either of them or their family, yet I know everything about them both and the murder. I know it has been many years since this happened, and I had no connection with it at all, but I still can't help but feel devastated about it. I think about it ALL the time, every day, and I dream about it every night. This really affected me and I know it will be something that will stay in my heart forever. But is it normal that this affected me so much even though I don't even know them?

This reminds me of this guy who did an investigation on a brutal murder case, the case was so disturbing and graphic that in the process of him trying to solve it, it became his life. He felt like he cared so much for the victim the more and more he investigated their case and how their life was before. (It was a movie.) So I think it would probably be a bad idea for you to get into anything like that as a career. It's not good to get emotionally attached to the stories and the victims. It can give you nightmares.

And thats really terrible that a 4 year olds life was snatched away from them, especially that way. We do live in a fucked up world. People are so fucked in the head. It really is disgusting! And whats really scary, is that every single human on this planet is capable of something so horrible. It disgusts me. I think its sick that we all do have the ability to hurt others, it's just that not everyone is sick enough, and some of us actually know right from wrong, and have morals. I just don't see how anybody could even live with themselves knowing that they did something so horrific as taking another persons life. And what really scares me is people who know exactly what they're doing when they do it. People who don't even care.

Hopefully that four year old is safe in heaven right now. And I think it would help you a lot to speak with a therapist.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the case where the little boy was a boy's scout who was selling cookies and the older boy told him to come in so they could play video games, and he killed him?

It's not normal if you don't feel anything. Inhuman acts should not be condoned and if these feelings can spur you into action for justice then its feelings worth having. We are all connected in humanity.

It's normal. I feel the same way but about the Oklahoma City bombing. I was young when it happened and don't remember because I was 6 but when I visited the memorial a few years ago and saw everything...I was devastated and will carry that in my heart forever. I know it's not specific people like your story but I think I know how you feel =)
