Is it normal that i'm annoyed when people say "if that makes sense"?

I'm tempted to say to people who say it to me, "If you have to ask me if you're making sense, you probably know already that you're not". I just think it's a stupid thing to say.

It’s short for, “If that makes sense to you.” Does that makes sense?

    • Yes. And if they mean that way, it's a very condescending statement, like they're talking down to you. I feel like saying, no why don't you explain it so a moron like me can understand it?

Or they’re explaining something complicated and want to know if they’re going too fast?

    • Yeah, right. If that makes sense.

I say it when I'm trying to describe something that's hard to explain. It is not intended to be an insult to the reader/listener at all.
