Is it normal that i'm annoyed by people who get offended by the word "gay"?

You know, one of the older polls on here is this rant about how obnoxious it is when someone calls something gay. "This TV show is gay" or "That backpack is gay".

Yeah, it's juvenile in its own right, but seriously, do we have to take this as an assault on the homosexual community? It's just a word. People don't even use it to mean homosexual half the time they call things gay. Heck, a ton of people aren't even thinking about homosexuality at all when they say "dude, I stubbed my toe, gay!"

It's just a damn word people say. Get over it, it's not all about trashing the homosexual community. When it is, get upset. When it's in reference to a backpack, just let it be. It's a colloquialism. It's the whole "he who must not be named" vs. "Lord Voldemort" thing. Words only have power when we give it to them, and getting super offended is giving a LOT of power. Am I the only person that feels this way?? Is it normal to?

  • Agreed. I'm a bastard son, does that mean I should make a community of other bastard sons and daughters and go crazy on everyone that says "You bastard"?

It is all part of the whole political correctness ideal. Some people are extremely thin-skinned and are insulted at the slightest provocation. These are the people who campaign against the casual use of words such as 'retard' and 'gay'.

All I can say is, grow a hide. It really is not hurting anyone.

I get mad when people say something is "retarded
or "gay" because its just very offensive! Sometimes I feel like many english words have lost their meaning.

For example, "gay" used to mean "happy"

I am offended by that use of the word "gay"; like it or not it demonises homosexuality. Would it be okay to say "that TV show is such a nigger"? No, that would be offensive. There is no difference between that and calling it gay because they both demonise something that CANNOT be changed. I'm not even gay and even I gind it offensive when people use words like gay and fag like that.

If you were gay, you'd probably not be so fond of it.

It won't be used forever, language changes. I used to say it's gay, until I realized how stupid it sounds.

    • I am bisexual with a strong tendency towards the more homosexual side of things... been in more relationships with the same sex than the opposite.

I just feel that we shouldn't give words the power to hurt us. If we can shrug off that which would otherwise offend us, we show that we are strong and can stand up to bigotry and hatred.

I'm better than a word, and I'm not going to let it hurt me, and I'm not going to jump all over someone for letting the word "gay" slip just because they've heard it in the vernacular their whole life.

Obviously you shouldn't jump all over someone for saying it. But because it's embedded in peoples minds, the word gay is subconsciously associated with bad or stupid, so it could very well be a factor for young people who are gay growing up hating themselves/ killing themselves. I'm talking about young people. It's like a way to bully them insidiously. It's not a big deal, but it's dumb. It was something I said as a youngster too though. My language has evolved since using gay as a derogatory term.

        • Well I guess agree it's kind of dumb, it just never bothered me nearly as much as it does when I see someone getting attacked for saying it.

It's a little stupid and unnecessary to use the word that way, but it's more stupid (in my opinion) to allow it to make you (generic you) feel all offended and start chastising people.

If someone tells you they're offended by something, you should take it seriously. You're not them, and don't know how they feel. If you were gay, hearing the term gay being used in a negative way might really hurt your self esteem or reinforce the idea that it's somehow wrong to be gay. Mind you, some people just like to complain about everything and are oh-so politically correct. But if you're really hurting someone by using the term gay, you'd be a jerk not to stop...

I dont agree with using the word these days but I've used it frequently my whole life.

So has my best friend. Until she decided one day that she was gay. Than whenever I said it, accidentally because I was trying to curb my use, she would have a total bitch fit.

    LOL. w.e

I agree, Like the word "Nigga". I am not going to get into detail, why I think it is an absolutely fine word to use.. However I will say that these terms, Gay, Nigga, are no longer used in a negative context. It is just a word. They are not used in a derogatory sense hardly ever. But modern slang I guess.

If you can't check them then don't try to wreck them. If you call someone like Rob Halford a fag you're gonna get rolled, I can tell by the nature of your question.

That being said I'm straight so don't even go there, I just grew up where running your mouth wreckless is a good way to get dished.

Is he a nermily little wad? Then yeah. Is he a straight guy acting gay? Then yeah, but say this to someone who's genuine and you might end up figuring out *exactly* why snide comments aren't acceptable.

everyone is using the original meaning meaning weird or odd, then it got changed to happy then the homosexual community used the word to identify themself as a shot to society because everyone else thinks homosexuality is weird or odd.

Its like that here too, I live in the mid west, and we've been using "straight" as slang for "acceptable" for as long as I can remember... I wonder where it started?
